T-Magazine‘s Spring Design Issue just hit newsstands this weekend, and my jaw dropped when I saw the Studio Job Bavaria cabinet in a spread about a family home in the Georgia countryside. I saw the cabinet at last year’s Moss party during ICFF and was obsessed with it then but wondered how it would work in someone’s home. Now I know: Add a smattering of Case Study Fiber-Glass Chairs from Modernica, an enormous country style dining table, and a Droog chandelier, and the piece manages to unite the space.

In less than a month, we packed up our entire apartment, scooped up the dog, and drove all of our belongings to our new home in New York — it was only after we moved in that we discovered the building had been featured in a 2006 issue of Dwell magazine!

So yes, we’ve been busy! And I probably won’t be posting as much as I used to, but don’t let that keep you from stopping by . . .

I have secretly been hoping that someone would give us a peek into the home of LA’s most exciting new transplant and the new director of LA MOCA. Deitch has taken up residence in a Spanish Revival mansion in Holmby Hills that was once owned by Cary Grant and currently contains more art than furniture. Clearly, a man who’s got his priorities straight.

Excuse the title’s pun, it happened totally by accident, but then I liked it, so it stayed. Moving on.

The San Francisco Patient and Resource Center could very well be the tipping point for the future of marijuana dispensaries. And that’s exactly what founder Erich Pearson wants. Pearson had been growing medical marijuana for years. So when he decided to open his own business, and he wanted to do it in a way that changed the industry’s model. For Pearson, that started with the architecture and design, the most apparent way of showing the world the validity of medical marijuana dispensaries.

He hired Larissa Sand of Sand Studios, who toured area dispensaries to get a feel for the business. In addition to realizing the strength of the community, she also noticed that its attention to aesthetics was virtually nonexistent. And so, using Twin Peaks Tavern (a Gay bar in San Francisco’s castro that stakes claim to being the first Gay bar with clear windows as opposed to blacked out windows) as inspiration, she went about designing a modern, minimal space that both the owner and designer believe will help further the legitimacy of the cause.

Read the article “Splendor in the Grass”

I love it when readers ask us for advice! Like a few days ago, when a young woman wrote us asking for suggestions on cool boutiques, neighborhoods, etc., to check out in Boston. She recently relocated to Boston from London (poor thing) to attend grad school and came across our site and thought we could point in her in the right direction. Most important on her list? A “nice, off-beat place to get a haircut.” This requirement delighted me because I’ve been dying to give you the first peek inside {Trephin} (unless of course you’ve already been!), and now I’m helping a sweet expat, too!

We wrote about {Trephin} in July after attending a photo shoot for its first print ad. Now, nearly three months later, the salon is up and running and about to host its first event – Powder Room – on October 4th. Located on the second floor of 25 Temple Place, the salon is a loft-like, open space, that employs a balance of Neo-Victorian and modern details – vanities are used as the stylists’ workstations, a tiered stand of brass-cast hands serves as a business card holder on the front desk, Louis Ghost chairs alternate with midcentury wooden chairs in the waiting area, super-modern Italian sinks function as wash stations. {Trephin} also carries organic hair products by Kevin Murphy and No. 4, both of which are impeccably packaged.

And for those of us who enjoy would employ a personal shampooist if we could (wait, is that only me?), wait until you experience it at {Trephin}, where your shampoo comes a view, courtesy of a vaulted roof lantern, straight up into the sky over Boston.

I have finally realized that no matter the circumstance, within a few months of living anywhere, I am soon itching with cabin fever and anxiously mapping out each and every step of my fantasy travels across the world. Upon my latest mental adventure, the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin, Germany popped up on my radar and has since given me a whole new perspective on the importance of somehow obtaining the German version of Rosetta Stone and purchasing a plane ticket abroad by tomorrow.

The main concept for the Michelberger was to create a comfortable and stylistically eclectic space while remaining in the category of “budget hotel”. Set in an old factory building, each one of the rooms carries an individually designed loft-style atmosphere with high ceilings and expansive windows. My favorite part: the mix-matching of modern objects with hand-built wooden furniture and flea-market findings.

Hatched from the minds of Belgian architectural firm, dmVA, this egg-shaped abode gives a new name to mobile homes worldwide. The easily transportable unit is made mostly of polyester and comes equipt with a bathroom, kitchen, bed, and multiple nooks and crannies for endless storage space. While the blob may not appear to be the coziest of dwellings, what it lacks in comfort it certainly makes up for in architectural design.

He’s examined iconic typography and visual culture in Helvetica and provided the world an intimate look into the design of very basic things in Objectified. But everyone wants to know, what will Gary Hustwit document next?

Fortunately, it looks like we won’t have to wait too long to find out. It was announced today that Hustwit is back behind the camera working on his next documentary, the third film in the series, entitled Urbanized. This time, training his lens on the issues and strategies that go into urban design.

Believe it or not, more than half of the world’s population lives in an urban center. And according to statistics, by 2050, that number will increase to 75%. Through interviews with some of the world’s most influential planners, architects, builders, what have you, Urbanized seeks to uncover what makes some cities more successful than others and addresses the challenge of balancing beauracratic tape with basic human need.

Urbanized is currently in production and is set to be released in 2011. We can’t wait!
