The standard thing to do if you want to avoid being chained to AT&T is to a) buy your phone anywhere other than Apple or AT&T (yes, this is possible), and b) ask to have it jailbroken and unlocked (this is typically an extra $100, but it allows you to download third-party software and gets around the AT&T tyranny).

Or if you need a PDA more than you need a phone, get the iPod touch — it doesn’t have the phone bits of the iPhone, but it does have Wi-Fi so you can transmit stuff whilst sitting at the Caribou or Starbucks.

Aha…. I appreicate the post–my partner was SO excited about the price drop and since our (evil) contract is up with T-Mobile next month… Yeah, you see where I’m going with this.

So, perhaps we will renegotiate our current plan on what cell phone provider to switch too.

Anyone thrilled with their provider?

I love it – $600 to $200 and still not worth owning. Thanks for the humorous advice…I”ll let my employer know that next month…she intended on buying me one for business….I still own a pay-as-you-go-phone which only costs me $20/month – no hidden fees either!
What other phones are available w/ PDA capabilities?
